PRIME MINISTER LAUNCHES AIRTEL MOBILE MONEY SERVICES

By Mugerwa Michael

Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi has called for consolidation of the Public – Private Partnership to ensure effective service delivery to the public. To achieve this objective, the Premier encouraged service providers to invest in research as a way to discover new innovations and solutions.

This was contained in a speech the Premier delivered at the launch of the Airtel Mobile Money services. The function took place at Kampala Serena Hotel.

Mr. Mbabazi said telecom service providers need to continuously add value to their services to enable positive social impact and economic growth especially in rural areas. The launch comes at a time when three other providers namely MTN, Uganda Telecom and Warid are already providing the mobile money service.

As government, the Premier noted that affordable information and communications solution is a right that must be availed. ‘We are determined to ensure it remains a reality by working in partnership with the private sector’, he said.

Mr. Mbabazi highlighted the direct benefits of mobile money services to the ordinary person. He said the service will enable faster payment for utilities like top up on mobile airtime, sending and receiving money across all networks.

As part of the symbol to launch the Airtel Mobile Money service, the Prime Minister used an Airtel mobile phone to send One hundred thousand shillings to one lucky beneficiary - David Mugabe, a journalist working with the New vision News Paper.

State Minister for Information and Communications Technology, Nyombi Tembo said that the introduction of new services should not compromise the quality of existing ones. He predicted that the mobile money services in Uganda might overtake other money transfer services sooner than later.

The Managing Director-Airtel Uganda, Mr V.G Somasekhar told guests who attended the launch that the company invested a total of Shs. 300 million in the last one year, to upgrade its network services at 300 sites country wide. He added that this has enabled at least 1.5 million customers to be accessed, bringing its total customer base to four million.
